How to move around

Porto di Nizza

By car

Car is a good way to visit the French Riviera, provided that you travel in low season, whereas driving through the coastal towns during tourist peaks can become a real nightmare, due to the intense traffic and overcrowded car parks.

In France all state roads are marked with green signs, whereas the highways are recognizable from the blue signs. Toll fees are generally quite expensive. The price of oil varies a lot from station to station, and those situated on the highways are generally more expensive.

Speed limit on highways is 130 km/h, 110 km on carriageways and between 70 and 90 km on extra urban roads. Numerous speed detectors are active all over the road network.

By bus

The regional bus network is very good, and allows to reach all the main resorts on the coats.

The company "Ligne d'Azur" serves Nice and other 24 major towns in the surroundings. A 3 hours ticket costs 1 Euro, while the daily ticket has a price of 4 Euro. More info on www.lignedazur.com
Since 2007 Nice is also provided with a tram line, which has notably simplified connections among the various districts and reduced the congestion. A one way ticket costs 1 Euro. Tickets cannot be purchased on board.

In Cannes and some nearby towns the public transport network is called “Bus Azur” . In coincidence with special events, for instance the Film Festival, a night service operates. www.busazur.com

To move along the coast you can use the RCA (Rapides Cote d’Azur), which offers daily connections with Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Mentone. More info on lines and timetables on: www.rca.tm.fr

The local transport network “TAM” offers an excellent service throughout the region, with more than 100 lines reaching every town and village within the department of the Maritime Alps. For night-lovers there are also night buses ("Noctambus"). circulating from 21.30 pm to 1.10 am between Nice, Cannes, Monaco and Mentone. By train

The French Riviera is provided with a network of folkloristic trains, connecting Provence with the Alps. These old trains, some of them steam locomotives, cover historic routes, offering the chance to admire breathtaking sceneries stretched between the mountains and the sea.

The most famous of these trains is the “Train de Pignes” in service from May to October, which will take you inland with its locomotive dating from 1909. The train connects Nice with Digne-les-Bains, winding through delightful villages, wild landscapes and impressive canyons: www.trainprovence.com

Another interesting itinerary is offered by the “Mountain Train” which connects Nice with the village of Tende, crossing the picturesque mountain villages of Peillon, Sospel, Breil, Saorge and La Brigue. The railway runs through the Valley of Paillon and Roya Bévéra, both rich of archaeological ruins and 36.000 wall carvings. For info: www.trainstouristiques-ter.com

By boat

The main ports on the French Riviera are Nice, Cannes, Villefranche sur Mer and Monaco.

It is not unusual to see enormous cruise ships and luxurious yachts sailing from these ports, as well as the ferry boats headed to Corse and to the resorts on the coast. More info on: www.corsica-ferries.fr e www.trans-cote-azur.com
